About linuxdoc.org
linuxdoc.org is an independent, non-commercial documentation site. It rewrites the classic Linux HOWTOs and guides for today's distributions and keeps them at the addresses the web has linked to since around 2000.
Then and now
Around 2000 to 2002 linuxdoc.org was one of the homes of the Linux Documentation Project (LDP), the volunteer project behind the HOWTOs, mini-HOWTOs and guides. The LDP continues at tldp.org. Many of its texts describe software and hardware that no longer exist, yet thousands of pages still link to their old linuxdoc.org addresses.
This site is not the LDP and does not reproduce its texts. Instead, each popular HOWTO has been written again, from scratch, for current Linux: the same subject, today's tools. The HOWTO index lists every old HOWTO and links to the classic version at tldp.org where it still exists.
How the pages are checked
- Commands are written for current releases of Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL and its rebuilds, Arch and openSUSE, and checked against man pages and the projects' documentation.
- Where distributions differ, the page says so. Version numbers carry the month they were checked.
- Each page ends with its sources. If a page and the official documentation disagree, follow the official documentation.
